A nearly perfect portable that could have had a second internal speaker (stereo) like the Crosley portables, and a lid that stayed attached when opened. Beware of the switch on the outside of the case, which could easily be bumped into the on position when moving, thus draining the batteries. The platter slips for a second under the record (poor traction) when started, and there is no room inside to store the AC adapter. Though it's a bit quiet at full volume, it does what it was designed to, and looks great.

The H4N is a cool little device with lots of functions - especially considering the pricetag.

However, I would like to bring up some issues that people should be aware of about this device:
1) 96kHz is only available for 2ch recording. In 4ch mode, you can only go up to 48k sampling rate. This was somewhat of a bummer for a quality-dependent engineer as myself.
2) The two XLR-inputs have preamps that are comparable to those found on USB audio-interfaces in the same price range - for normal close-miked music, interview recording or high-output mics, this is not as much of a problem, but if you want to capture pristine sound from field recordings or silent sound events and need some gain on the pres, the hiss will definitely fall on your nerves very soon.
3) On the other hand using external preamps and turning down the hissy amps of the H4N tends to overdrive easily when fed line-level signals.

The target group that will enjoy this device most are people who record their rehearsals, mostly using the built-in mics, or people making composition sketches using the handy 4ch multitrack mode that allows overdubbing! (pretty incredible for such a tiny box for 0)
All the functions sit right on the edge of being "almost pro", yet it isn't completely pristine, not really top notch:
For sound capturing with a top-priority in quality, this little fun device is not exactly the right choice - for that the bigger recorders such as the Tascam HD-P2 or the Korg MR-1000 or an Oade Bros modded Fostex FR2 are definitely better suited - but, that's a whole different pricetag, and doesn't include any mics whatsoever.

Still - I think where it's at, it's without much competition.

I have many brands and models of digital voice recorders, during which I sold tested many recorders. I would say that the Olympus DS-30 Digital Voice Recorder is one of the well-rounded voice recorder is so far the design and features it offers for the award. I like the Olympus DS-30, so that I do it for most of my dictation and personal recording.

I use this recorder to dictate Daily Journal audio recording memos, and hostMeetings. Memo Recording works from the compact design of the DS-30 large, I can easily carry it in my pocket and I just noticed that even there, and if I record a short memo or idea, is always with me!

I am very impressed with the ability of the DS-30 to record the settings, where there is a large group of people. I used the recorder in many of my church meetings, records in a room full meeting of at least 200 people, including children andChildren. I thought they put on mode of teaching with low-cut filter records, and when I play it again I play with the cancellation of noise. When I play recordings from meetings of the church, I am very happy with how exactly do I impressed, despite all the speakers to hear the background noise and poor reception back!

For someone who for a long period of high-quality mode, I recommend the Olympus DS-40 or DS-50, which are basically the same writer wants, but with more memory.

Bought mine from Streamline Audio Video via Amazon. Great price, free shipping and came quickly.

Hard to believe it's so hard to find a review for such a great product. It's very intuitive. File management is drag and drop. Hooks up to USB and charges from computer or optional power supply. Lasts a long time on a charge. Holds lots of songs. (read the specs for data) The looping and slow down features are great for practicing. Just push a button right on the front for start and stop points and another to loop. Slowing down without changing the pitch is one button push. Push it again to return to normal speed. I use it mostly for practicing drums since I don't have tabs for that. I have used it with guitar too. I think looping and slow down are the best features. The drum machine effects sound good and have a nice variety of beats but I haven't spent much time with that. Used it to record some ideas with the band live and was amazed at how good the levels were with no mixing or fiddling around. Emailed the song to the rest of the guys and they were impressed with it too - one take - live.
I have also used it to move some cassette tapes to MP3 format and it works fantastic for that too. A nice bonus. I bought the optional power supply too for around - it is high quality.
I love this thing. My playing has improved quite a bit since it's arrival.
Hope this helps you as I could find very little info when I was looking.

I don't want to repeat what others have written. This product is not as ugly and flimsy as other people have written. I don't know what they are looking for. A tank or a recorder!
LCD panel is a little small but works fine. It's not very hard to use. Read the manual once or twice. You will need female three pin xlr to 1/4" xlr cable to connect it to a microphone with xlr output. The foam windscreen that came with it is not great for windy situation. I made one myself with faux fur from a fabric store and works great. No need to spend .00 for a windscreen.
AA batteries does not last very long so keep lots of extra. I use A/C adapters whenever possible. You get a lot for the money, xlr inputs and 48v and 24v phantom power. I haven't used the phantom power yet. Somewhere I read AA batteries can handle only upto 24v phantom power and you will need a/c power for 48v. I don''t know how accurate is that. This is a great product but I heard H4n is even better if you can spend more money.

This allows the recorder to cover a wide area, and at the same time capture sound sources in the center with perfect clarity and definition. Phase differences between left and right channels are also eliminated because sound is picked up simultaneously by both microphones.

Absence of phase differences ensures natural stereo imaging

24-bit/96 kHz linear PCM format and MP3 recording:
The H4 allows 24-bit/96 kHz linear PCM recording in WAV format, resulting in excellent transparency and definition that exceeds the sound quality of CDs. This is great for capturing the nuances of an acoustic instrument while preserving the ambience of the recording location. Or record directly as MP3 files for longer recordings that still provide excellent sound quality.

Secure Digital (SD) Media
The H4 records on Secure Digital (SD) Media cards. These widely available cards boast an amazing amount of recording time in a small package. And unlike tape or disc media, mechanical vibrations do not affect recording quality.
